Zeke and Luther try to go pro
June 16, 2009

"Zeke and Luther" is a new show coming out June 15th on Disney XD. The show has skateboarding as the main focus, and yesterday I was able to talk to Adam Hicks (from the movie How to Eat Fried Worms), who plays Luther from the show.
"It's about 2 kids who strive to become professional skateboarders," said Adam. "It’s also full of outrageous stunts. If you love to laugh, you’ll love this show." The show was filmed at Redondo Beach in Southern California.

I asked Adam about his own history in skateboarding, and he said that he’s skateboarded for around 7 years. He went through his own time of wanting to become a pro skater, so being on this show is like a dream come true for him. Personally, I was thankful to hear this. With Disney behind the show, and it being aimed at kids, you never know what’s going on behind the scenes. I’m stoked that they found actors who can actually skate, and who already love skateboarding!

Adam said he does his own flatland tricks in the show, like kickflips, but that some of the more "insane" tricks, like grinding huge rails, they have a pro come in on. Jimmy Gorecki supervises the skateboarding for the show, and has taught Adam a lot so far.

I asked Adam what he would say to people who feel the show is pushing skateboarding even more mainstream, and he said he’s already had some people get in his face about it. In response he said, “There’s one thing I’ve learned from all of this, and that is that skateboarding is a lifestyle, more than it is a hobby. People eat, drink and live skateboarding. I’ve heard that 3 out of 5 people in America have skateboarding. That’s huge. Skateboarding is decidedly a lifestyle, and it’s constantly growing like a lifestyle.”

When asked what the show brings to skateboarding, Adam explained, “This show brings a whole new flavor to skateboarding. It shows this lifestyle that I’m talking about. It shows the skateboarding lifestyle and mentality.”

“Whether you skate or not, there’s something for you. This show is about dedication, and following your dreams.” That's a message I can get behind, and I hope Zeke and Luther does well, and gets more kids interested in skating. Check out the Zeke and Luther gallery to see larger photos from the show, and feel free to post comments about what you think this show will be like, and how you feel about it!
