Pool Party at the Pink Motel...

Last Friday, there was a big party going on at "The Pink Motel" somewhere is Southern California to celebrate the release of Rune Glifberg new Converse shoe. Located at XXXX San Fernando Road, in (undisclosed location) the Pink Motel dates back to 1946 and has appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including 2004's "The Whole Ten Yards" (with Bruce Willis & Matthew Perry) and "House of Sand & Fog". It is still open for business as a motel but the manager rents it as movie set.
On the guest list were people like Peter Hewitt, Lance Mountain, Christian Hosoi, Darrell Stanton, Angel Ramirez, PLG, Double D, Skreech, Josh Borden, Dave Hackett… Thrasher and Transworld were invited at the party too, but by checking they reports on their respective websites, it seems that they either don’t really care about Converse or don’t really care about vert skaters. First, I thought that they wouldn’t care about both, but by judging several of their reports of other vert related events, It seems that they probably do care about Converse because Converse can potentially buy ads in their mags (or websites) and they don’t give a shit about vert skaters. The lure of big fat checks from Converse is probably why they went to the party, I guess. Concrete Disciples was invited too and unlike Thrasher and Transworld, they made an excellent job. The pics are what you expect from a pro vert-photographer and the text is excellent as usual: pertinent, full of information even poetic.

Since I was not invited , I have nothing to show or to talk about but I sure want to share the story with you. So, here is an excerpt from the Concrete Disciple website.

Are we in Sun Valley? Pacoima? Some un-annexed dank region of what may or may not be the San Fernando valley? Water is in short supply here, that's for certain. It's never really quite clear when you're here, and once you're pool-side, it really ceases to matter. I was here once some 20 years ago, I was here last week, and here I am again today, at the Pink Motel with its Moby Dick-inspired swimming pool. No one is really quite sure at what point why this pool became a skateboarding only affair, its pumps and plumbing long un-serviceable. It was the HQ for SkateTV at one time, it's been sessioned by the best and the worst for decades running. And the reality always was that this "fantasy" skate destination wasn't really ever that good. Ultra slow rutted plaster, a rather limited amount of the lengthy roundwall that actually had good transition, and so on. Photos made it look like the best pool ever, but anybody who rode it knew, it really wasn't what it appeared to be. Many who skated it over the years always came away wondering "what if". Lance Mountain came away from the filming of The Search For Animal Chin at the Pink Motel thinking the very same thing. It would seem fitting that when Steve Luther and the heads at Converse decided to put up the money to re-surface and resuscitate the Pink for Rune Glifberg's shoe release party and leave a better pool behind for future users, they turned to Lance and California Skateparks to make sure that the job was done right. It's the same old pool, it's just smoother now, and with a much faster ride. Maybe that will piss some people off, but then some people will bitch about most things, regardless of merit or consequence. Who cares, it's more fun now than it ever was, and it still has each and every nipple and hole in place.

To read the whole story, please, go to the Concrete Disciples website. Enjoy it, that’s excellent stuff.

TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE FULL SK8 HISTORY OF THE ' FISHBOWL', CONTACT WAGNER AT jestwag@gmail.com I, ALONG WITH MY BROTHER, TERRY BIXLER, DISCOVERED, DRAINED, CLEANED, AND SK8ED THE FISHBOWL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN '74-'75. I GAVE THE POOL THE NAME FISHBOWL BECAUSE OF ITS SHAPE AND BECAUSE THE Z-BOYZ HAD THEIR DOGBOWL, WE HAD OUR FISHBOWL. WE MADE A DEAL WITH MONTY ( the owner ) THAT WE WOULD KEEP THE POOL CLEAN, AND KEEP THE KOOKS OUT IF HE LET US SK8 IT, & FOR YEARS, TERRY & I WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO WERE ALLOWED TO SK8 IT. WE BROUGHT THE Z-BOYZ TO IT, AS WELL AS THE OG V-BOYZ, 'JER 'VALDEZ, KENT SENATORE, MARK SMITH, BRAD BOWMAN, & SHREDDIE REPAS. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS... WAGNER RODRIGUES, SK8R 4 LIFE.
