Is Skateboarder Magazine going back to its roots?

I had a nice surprise when I opened my mail box this morning: I received the new Skateboarder magazine. Well, what’s new about this, since I regularly receive Skateboard Mag, Transworld, Skateboarder and, albeit less regularly –hum, guys, guys- Juice, I should not have been surprised.
And since isTia promoted the new Juice Magazine a couple of days ago, I thought I just could do the same for Skateboarder Magazine.

Skateboarder used to be the best magazine of all, with sparkling pictures showcasing the amazing ever blue sky of Southern California and the best pool riders skateboarding has ever yield. Looking at the amazing pictures of The Runway, Marina Del Rey, The Ranch, Oasis was like a dream come true. The original skateboarder crew left an imprint on skateboarding so huge that even now they are still recognized as ultra talented and visionaries. Skateboarder Magazine made millions of skateboarders dream with their revolutionary content. Unfortunately, that was 30 years ago. Since then, Skateboarder Magazine switched to Action Now in the 80’s and skateboarding became black and white and destroy and bleak and the rest is history.I always dreamed to write for Skateboarder, but since the new crew is very limited and they know what they are doing, they don’t need me. So I started isTia…

So, what is new about the New Skateboarder Magazine is that it is new. It features lots of pictures of Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Steve Olson with lots of text and lots of ads and nice colors and fonts. Sorry for just being sarcastic here: I actually love those guys. I really do. Actually, it’s a great time for Steve Olson: he just got on two different movies, got two pages on Skateboarder Magazine and just made the #1 love letter to skateboarding from Jeff Grosso (out 2 days ago…)…

Skateboarder is now shifting bi-monthly. That means that the mag will be sent only six times a year, but they promise that with one extra month for each issue they will have more in-depth features. They are also going on a giant size, which is kinda nice actually. The good thing about skateboarding are the inspiring pictures in the magazines and Skateboarder has a long history of showcasing awesome pictures. Add here and there some slight redesign and the use of the old square yellow logo and it looks like Skateboarder is going back to its roots and what’s wrong with that? If Skateboarder could regain its lost notoriety and go back to where it belong, the #1 spot, I won’t complain, not me!

So, if you do not have a Skateboarder Magazine subscription, maybe now is the time to do so…

Tony Alva was mad because he was not the Skateboarder Magazine’s
“Skater Of The Year” in 1978. To his defense, he probably should have been.
I guess Skateboarder decided to repair the error by having him
on the content page in 2011.
