Rob Dyrdek’s Street League Skateboarding offers $1.6M purse

With the NFL currently mired in a lockout and the NBA facing the same fate following the end of the upcoming Summer-long Odyssey known as their playoffs, there may be a void in the American sporting consciousness for a new organization to fill. And with the purse for their upcoming season set at a cool $1.6M, Street League Skateboarding may be that new kid in town.

The brainchild of skating entrepreneur and reality show/DC shoe magnate Rob Dydrek, Street League Skateboarding is the first serious attempt to transform a sport consisting of a rag-tag band of well-paid freelancers on wheels into a complete sports league, with contract exclusivity and a championship game. Extreme!!!

Of the 24 skaters in each Street League event, 10 go to the finals. Dyrdek said the competition has been tweaked so that two skaters are eliminated in each of the first two sections of the finals, with only six going on to the last section.

“Now you have that exciting buzzer-beater and some high-stakes skating going on,” he said. “Now if a guy has a bad first section, all of a sudden P-Rod or Chris Cole, essentially one of our heroes here, if they don’t make it up right here with a gnarly trick, they’re eliminated.
Anybody want to join my Fantasy Skater league? You get bonus points for gnarly tricks and drug arrests.

It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for skating and other action sports to mobilize into an actual league, but with the sheer number of skateboarders in this country I have little doubt Street League Skateboarding will be a successful endeavor, right Rob?

“You have to understand that despite what it looks like from the outside looking in, street skateboarding is 80 percent of action sports,” Dyrdek said. “There’s 15 million participants in action sports, and 10 million of them are street skaters.”
Uhh…good thing they’re skaters and not mathletes.

16-year-old Nyjah Houston won the overall points title last year.
