Prelude to Pro-Tec Pool Party 2011: the best organized chaos ever. Chapter I: The Masters

On may 21st, the who’s who of skateboarding will gather around the most respected pit in the word to witness, for the 7th time in a row, some of the most amazing spectacle skateboarding has yield in its 50 year of existence: the Pro-Tec Pool Party. Most of the spectators will be there to watch the Masters in shock and awe; even if some Pros are now better than some Masters, a couple of Ams are better than some Pros and a couple of groms are potentially even better than some Pros.

Yeah.
If you don’t think like me, go ahead and throw me the first stone; what is truth, anyway?

Actually, some groms are even so awesome, that you sometimes wonder if they did not start skateboarding in the womb. And, when you think about it, isn’t the womb the original pool anyway with all its nice and smooth curves? I know it’s a stretch, but aren’t we all born pool riders and evolution took its toll leaving aside most of us and leaving only a couple of geniuses’ DNA break loose?
.

Master view of the 2010 Pro-Tec Pool Party at Vans Combi Pool and the media frenzi. No, it is not a soccer game, but more than 1500 people gathered for a skateboard event which was broadcast on Fuel.TV.

Unfortunately, we are all subdued by our massive inertia; we are eating too many GMO, too much French fries with our sodas and too much hormoned-beef. We are postponing, we are dilettante, we are engineered and hard wired to resist change. Our mind is vaporized by the Birthers, the skeptics, the propagandists, the extremists, the conspirationists and misled to think that all those tricks are impossible to do; but the Pro-Tec Pool Party’s living legends are here to testify that, yes, they can do all of those things that you will see on Fuel.TV on May 21st . And even more behind the lens. Just remember what C.R. Stecyk once said. To paraphrase him: 5000 years of civilization “has unwittingly created a massive cement playground of unlimited potential. But it was the minds of 11 year olds that could see that potential”. Are the groms a newborn awakening? The grom says, nothing at all. But when the groms are the unwritten future of the skateboarding’s world, the Masters are not of this world, they represent the skateboard world’s genesis and foundation.

Does it really matter what Master is better than the other? Yes, because that’s a contest and the 1st will pocket a check roughly ten times more than the 5th…

Wrong!

No, it really does not matter. Like the name says, the Pro-Tec Pool Party really is more of a party than a contest. What matters here is the osmosis between the legit spectator and the riders. What matters is that the avalanche of tricks is performed like a poet performs his art. Any layman just sees Cab flowing at full speed at the bottom of the Pool, but in your mind, you know. You feel it in your skin and in your soul and you already envision the next move, a Caballerial over the coping, so elegant, impeccable and predictable; like a Jim Morisson poem.

Geff Grosso with Arcadia Pride...

And that happens! A by-the-book Caballerial! So perfect, so fine tuned by 20 years of pool riding that it’s almost the apex of skateboarding. Like, like … OK, I’ll stop here…

The beauty of the Combi pool is the fact that you have this massive pit with hips, corners and a shallow end to skate. Every skater brings a different approach and creativity when they skate it.

At the end of the contest, there is a Jam Format that ends up pushing at once too many people into the bowl and that turns the Combi into a regular pool with skaters stuck in each bowl until the other falls or gets out. Some say that it's hard to make the Jam Sesh work at the Combi since it prevents people from riding the entire pool and thus entire lines are missing.

The other problem being that some get 2-3 runs while others get 8-10 runs.

On the other hand, skaters can do their best lines during the prelim, they don’t need to wait for the Jam Sesh.

Plus the Jam Format sesh is the essence of the Party. It’s a total organized chaos and generates incredible energy, inside and outside the pool. And when there is that free-for-all jam session, are people losing respect for each other by dropping in? No it’s just spectacular and dangerous.

You have to remember that those Masters have known each other for 30 years. Hosoi, Salba & Malba, Chris Miller, DP, Eric Nash, were already ripping the Combi at Pipeline in the 70’s and 80’s until the last day when the mighty bulldozer was the last to rip and shred the coping with a daunting laugh and they show a lot of respect for each others.

Hosoi
Since bowl riding rematerialized, they have seen each other at all major contests; they certainly know each other’s style, secret joker, shortcoming and expertise.

Unlike the Pro section where we see the same 10 guys in the top 10 for the past 7 years, the Master sesh is more chaotic and there are only two constants.

Chris Miller
The first major constant we have here is Chris Miller. Thanks to his unmatched style and speed, Chris Miller has won the Pro-Tec Pool Party Masters division the first five years and landed #2 in the sixth year, turning the Pro-Tec Pool Party into a “Miller time”. I fell speechless: It is frankly quite amazing even though Chris Miller quit being professional skateboarder years ago. Chris Miller still dominates the Masters class in nearly every event he enters.. He generally skates at Bucky’s Heaven and at the various San Diego bowl and vert spots at least a couple of days a week.

Cab
Plus, he has one of the most stylish frontside airs ever: last year, thanks to the Combi Pool resurfacing, he did the biggest frontside air transfers into the round that he has ever done, plus half cab bluntslides, and 50/50 back lip in the corner. When he is not skating, he owns and operates both Planet Earth and Adio footwear. Is he in a good position to regain his title from Cab this year? You bet!

Steve Caballero
The second constant is Cab. In the podium the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year, # 4 in the 5th year and big winner last year, yellow Cab has been a household name in skateboarding since the early 1980’s and still is thanks in part to his long-running character in the Tony Hawk video game series. Steve’s skateboarding career shows what it pays to be loyal to your sponsors.

Cab
He has been riding for Powell Peralta ever since Stacy found him on a local San Francisco contest in 1978 and has the longest -running pro model shoe in skate history, the Vans Half Cab. Since he won last year, he is this year’s target of everybody but he is not going to let go a title that took him 6 years to earn. So, be prepared to a battle between Cab and Chris this year.

Lance Mountain
The rest of the masters are all over the place. Some of them did not even participate at each Protec Pool Party (Grosso and Lance Mountain Lance, DP and Salba) because they were injured. Lance Mountain is another example of skateboarding longevity even if the same thing can be said of all Masters… Of course… He was a professional skateboarder even before the

The pool skaters and the pseudo writers are the same, in a way: we are all trying to find the best lines for our art.
Pool Riders have bags full of tricks, we have bags full of words.

Bones Brigade’s days, and he is showing no signs on stopping any time soon. A couple of year ago, Lance built a swimming pool in his backyard, specifically for skateboarding. That’s his legacy in the Flip Skateboard’s video “Extremely Sorry.” He also participated in the resurfacing of the Combi last year.

Jeff Grosso
Grosso started skateboarding at the age of 8. He rode on various teams: Vari-flex, Santa Cruz, Powell, Schmitt Stix, Black Label and now Antihero. Sorry if I missed one… He was featured on the 2006 movie Rising Son (with Hosoi) on the 2005 “Who Cares - The Duane Peters Story” on the 2001 “Label Kills”. At the Protec Pool Party 2010, Jeff Grosso became the king of the board slide when he covered about 75% of the round side of the Combi pool.

Cab: "Dave, repeat that! You said I won?... Wooaaahh!"
That slide was not only the longest, but also the more powerful and the more perfect of all. Grosso is a freight train on a skateboard and If you have skated the Combi, you know that even a 10 block slide is sick, so when he reached the two third of the pool (28 blocks slide) at the Blocks For Bucks contest of the Protec Pool Party, everyone went wild. Jeff pocketed $2000 for this slide which was worth every penny. He participated to a lot of contest since the Protec Pool Party and Vans even sent him to the Bowl-A-Rama at Sydney, but he got sick and finished at the hospital after eating something strange…

2010-2011 are actually Jeff’s biggest years ever: at 43 years old, he is living his mid-life crisis better than most and is possibly skating better than he ever has in life. On top of his PPP win, Vans launched the Jeff Grosso legends Pack series. Then, he got a brand new design board with Anti-Hero. But the biggest news of the year for Grosso is when “Off The Wall.tv” gave him a show called “Jeff Grosso’s Love Letters to Skateboarding”. He has also prepared a Combi-Pool special that is broadcasting on offthewall.tv right now.

Duane Peters
Duane Peters was injured in 2008 and did not participate! In 2010, he got a bad staph infection while touring with Vallely (Mike V!) last summer, then, has been on the road a long part of the year with Pocket Pistols.

Those Masters are like the Dead Poets Society aiming for Dead Presidents.
On a skateboard, Duane doesn't bail. He is truly the king of equilibrium (an equilibrium is always very close to a disaster): every time you think he is going to slam, he makes it. He is not the kind of guy you want to watch if you have a peacemaker: you’ll have a cardiac arrest while he is already on the other side of the pool. No matter how hard he sometimes goes down, he never stays there. If you didn't see it, all I can tell you is that it was better than ever. I'm sure he would think I'm an absolute jerk for saying all of this, but I don't care.

Christian Hosoi
Christian Hosoi was dubbed skateboarding's first rockstar. "Holmes" was a relentless vert skater in the 80s thanks to his speed, massive Christ and Rocket airs, and flamboyant fashion sense. In the early 90s, when vert was replaced by street skating, Christian disappeared from the spotlight, but his legacy wasn’t forgotten. After a drug arrest in 2000, just as the X-Games and other contests were breathing new life into vert skating, Christian spent five years in prison. Christian Hosoi found salvation with Christianity, never lost his love for skateboarding, and upon being released, hit the ground rolling. The documentary "Rising Son: The Legend of Christian Hosoi" is the story of his life. The new generation of skaters has taken note of his classic style and ability to rip everything from vert ramps, to skateparks, to backyard pools. He placed second at Pro-Tec in 2009 and 8th last year.

Jeff Hedges
Jeff Hedges is one of the returning Masters this year. Jeff (aka. ffej) was a 1988 Amateur Vert and Street Champion at the Münster Monster Skateboarding Mastership. He made a remarkable appearance in the Santa Cruz Skateboards video called Streets of Fire.
Steve Caballero, Chris Miller, Lance Mountain, Christian Hosoi, Jeff Grosso, Nicky Guerrero, Duane Peters, Sergie Ventura, Jeff Hedges, Eric Nash, Lester Kasai, Tony Mag, Mark Scott, Pat Ngoho, Steve Alba, Salba, Ben Schroeder, Cara-Beth Burnside, Cab, Pro-Tec Pool Party, Masters Protec, Vans Skatepark, Protec Pool Party, bowl riding, vert, Pro-Tec Pool Party 2011, Brian Pennington, Josh Nelson, Steve Steadham, Ken Fillion, Lonny Hiramoto, Dave Duncan, Vans Skatepark at The Block, WCS, Pool Riding, Bowl Riding
Chef Van Doren. Yes, He is a Master too. Big respect.
In 1995, after the death of vert, Jeff left skating and began a career in the video game industry, for Sega and then landing at Nokia. But the US economy being what it is after the housing bubble exploded left Jeff with a lot of extra time (7 days a week…) to practice his passion. So, Jeff Hedges, the master of inverted tricks is back with a vengeance. My guess is that he can do all the invert on the book (and even the ones that are not referenced), whatever the name you give them: handplant, invert, Tuck Knee Invert( An invert that is grabbed like a Japan Air and tweaked severely, sometimes with the nose of the board hitting the helmet), eggplant, Andrecht Invert, Gymnast Plant (no footed), Sadplant, and One Foot Invert, the Unit (540 frontside handplant), 540 McEgg (invented by Mike McGill). In an interview with isTia, Jeff Hedges told us that he “mostly ride Greg Neal's vert ramp in Richmond CA and Lake Cunningham skatepark in San Jose.” He adds that: ”I got to go to the Combi last month, and even a day at Bucky's so I guess that was practice for the contest…” Same as Grosso, 2010 was an excellent year for Jeff Hedges: he “ went to the Combi contest as a spectator, having only recently gotten back on board on a regular/weekly basis.” He also “entered a couple local contests at Lake Cunningham.
Pro-Tec Pool Party 2005-2010: results
In the same interview for isTia, he told us: "The judges placed me 4th at the Tim Brauch contest there (far exceeding any expectation I had). I also went to the Quicksilver all 80's Day jam in Florida (placing 7th) and to the Vert Attack 5 in Malmo Sweden (5th).” In the same interview, he confirms that: “It’s been a surreal year, skating a lot and entering contests, like I was a kid again.”

Just a kid, just a fool...
Always trying to play it so cool...
So, he did what he knew..
Took his board and played anew...

Good luck folks!!!
