Venice AM Series 3rd installment: bags full of tricks

I love week-ends like this, I really do, especially when there’s a lot of action around, and even if sometimes there’s a lot of downside too.

On the downside, when I was at Venice on Saturday all day taking pictures of the some of the most amazing local riders, I witnessed the slam between Mighty and Lance at full speed at the bottom of the big bowl. Mighty ended with some bruises in the ankle but Lance had to be rushed to the hospital where he certainly had to have a looooot of stitches (only 9 stitches which seems not a lot given the size of the wound). It froze the mind of a lot of people to see you bleeding like that in the bowl... Lance: we all hope you are feeling better by now and ready to roll soon.

The other downturn is that I scratched my camera’s memory card at midnight and lost all of the 500 pix I had taken. When it happens to other, it’s a bummer, when it happens to you, you feel desperate and betrayed… But I’m lucky enough to have Ray Rae (The Photograph of Venice … ) as a very good friend and he let me use his pix for isTia. Ray’s pictures were better than mine anyway, so i’m kindof grateful that I scratched the memory card (just kiddin’ of course… Damn memory card!). So, that makes a good reason for me to use his pix and not mines…

Ray has actually covered the all event all day and has his pictures everywhere.

On the upside, it was a skateboarding week-end for me: I was at Volcom on Sunday investing and planting the seeds of bowl skating to 4 and 7 year old kids and I was harvesting the work of the skate teens at Venice on Saturday. Both days were full of sunshine, good time, good vibes (Bennet Harada was the assigned DJ at Venice and played it hard and loud, as expected) and friendship (and lost pix -damit).

Supremacy of: Charlie Blair, Eddie “Mighty” Moreno, Lance Newton, Matt Boyster, Shane Borland…

So, Saturday was already the 3rd installment of the Venice AM contest, organized by Jeff Stern of the NAS -sorry for the pix Jeff- you will have to organize a new contest for me; I guess… LOL. The contest was really an opportunity to see the future of skateboarding unravel in front of our eyes. And boy, how bright the future looks like…

At 12, 14, 18, those kids are already better than some Masters and show that vert skateboarding has started evolving at full speed again with new tricks invented every day.

Those new kids are coming to town with bags full of tricks, some of them directly coming from street and adapted to vert and bowl riding and some other with roots in the older OG generation. The set of the contest was the new Venice skatepark… Well, of course, when I say new, I know the skatepark opened 19 months ago, but 19 months is nothing for those who waited more than 10 years to see their dreams realized… So far the park almost looks pristine and exactly how we expect it to be: with shredded coping. It’s a good thing that only the coping of the big bowl is made of tiles, in a couple of months, those tiles will need to be changed whereas the rest of the bowls have metal coping that allows for a much longer life.

It’s the ransom of success: long live Venice skate park.

Business as usual. This is becoming tedious (for the others that is…)

The results for the 4-30-11 Venice Am Series are in! Special thoughts to Lance Carrera Newton, it froze the mind of a lot of people to see you bleeding in the bowl... We all hope you are feeling better by now and ready to roll soon.
