For the third year in a row we were out at the Converse Coastal Carnage awesome bowl for practice. Yeah, there’s a lot of skin out there! Much more than you can imagine. The surf culture has definitely invaded skateboarding… (or maybe the skateboarding culture has invaded the beach bumps…) Anyway, as usual, no parking space is available 10 miles around… But that was worth the drive/wait: there is always something positive about the smaller crowds, absent TV cameras, being able to be on the deck with the “athletes” without 50 photographers in front of you and no pressure for the skaters. That definitively makes practice more fun to watch than the finals.

A dust bowl in HB? Uh?

In the heart of the craziness, the booths, the skin, the bikinis, on the almost pristine beach (it has been pristine one day in a distant past) the bowl contest is shrouded with dust that’s infiltrating your nose, lungs, pores. But that’s not preventing a lot of spectators to see some of the world’s best bowl skaters in action.

Like last year, the 2011 edition of the Coastal Carnage bowl has a bright blue double wooden structure with plenty of hips, tight corners and mellow transitions incorporating new obstacles this year to keep the competition exciting: a volcano that will see skaters do marvels on it. If practice is any indication to what they guys have in store, the half million visitors are in for a show. More people than a small city in Mid-west: the actual event site stretches over 14 acres of sand. A literal tent city is constructed, complete with hot-dog vendors, stadium seating, plush VIP digs, a skateboard park, a ding repair station, a concert stage, and a massive complex that serves as a retail and concession space.
Fresh from an appearance in X Games Converse Skate ambassador Rune Glifberg will compete against a wave of fresh new talent. Up-and-comer Tom Remillard (pix on the left) returns this year looking to better his runner up finish at last year’s contest. Other competitors include Ben Hatchell, Zach Miller, Ryan Reyes, Sammy Bacca, Kenny Anderson, Nolan Johnson, David Kalani, Robbie Russo, Riley Stevens...

Robbie Russo on a very long smith grind: Wow… This is one of the most stylish reentry I ever saw…
and that's only the practice...
X Games standout and bronze medalist Ben Hatchell will be looking to continue his momentum on the bowl circuit hoping for a victory at one of the funnest contest of the season.

Converse Coastal Carnage is a jam format consisting of 10 qualifying rounds with four riders skating against each other at the same time.

The qualifying rounds starts on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. with the Coastal Carnage finals on Sunday at Sunday at 4 p.m. If you can't make it down to the beach don't worry both the qualifiers and finals will be broadcasted live.

The practices were marred by one incident though. P’tit Ju, Julien Benoliel fresh arriving from France and 11th at the Ocean City Dew Bowl 2 weeks ago fall on his wrist. That’s not the first time that the wrist is taking the slam so Julien stood in pain for a good 10mn. But nobody saw it, he’s too proud for that… Anyway, after a good 15mn, he was ushered to a doctor and was prescribed immediate X-Rays at Newport Beach. We’ll have the results tomorrow.

Except for that incident, Yeah, Coastal Carnage Practices were awesome…
