Vans shoes co-founder James Van Doren has died in Southern California at 72.

The Van Doren Rubber Co.’s canvas deck shoes became favorites of the burgeoning skateboard culture because of sticky waffle soles that helped skaters grip their boards starting in 1966.
Vans was (and still is to this date) the favorite shoe of the best skaters in the world. Numerous old school skaters were sponsored by Vans and the more long standing sponsoree is Steve Caballero… vans  got national exposure when Sean Penn wore Vans in the 1982 movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

Vans is a remarkable brand that has survived and maintained its image of Skate shoes for core skateboarder for more than 40 years when other major skateboard brands like Airwalk or Vision failed into oblivion after both being the #1 skateboard shoe worldwide. The only current core competitor for Vans on the market is etnies, and to a less extent Converse. Others are just followers that jumped on the bandwagon of skateboard fame less than a decade ago. Vans is considered as the true skateboard shoe by many…
Several members of the Van Doren familyare still working at the company, including Kristie Van Doren and Steve Van Doren who is present at every Vans contest and is well known for making the best hamburgers of the skate industry…
James Van Doren’s legacy is a thriving brand that will celebrate a girl contest (I know, bad timing) at the Vans skatepark in two days.
James Van Doren guided the Cypress, Calif., company through the checkerboard era of the deck shoes. He ran Vans from 1976 to 1984.Several people of the Van Doren familly.
More updates soon…
