In a world where street skating is the mainstream, slaughtering other forms of skating, it is refreshing to see skate companies offering different products and being good at it. So good that they eventually out grow street skating and become leaders and a business model for others.

Started about 18 years ago out from a backyard in Southern California, Sector 9 has recently been acquired by Billabong. This initial DIY company pre-internet craze, making boards one at a time for friends only eventually pop up in one of the ASR trade Shows. Steve Lake recalls that: “We went to our first trade show and by the time we got there we were $2,000 in the hole and out of money. We talked to some guy who wanted to buy 100 boards and pre-paid the order. We took that money, left the trade show, and went and bought the materials to make a couple hundred boards. We took that money and funded the production and shipped all the orders out to everyone COD and that was the seed money that started Sector 9. We moved into a little 1000-square-foot warehouse shortly there after.”

But there after they moved into a little 1000-square-foot warehouse, they were broke. And it went on for several years, with jobs outside the industry, at Trader Joes, Chiles to just pay the bills. They did it the hard way, and most of the guys you see in skateboarding that have been around have done it the hard way.

There is an excellent interview from Kailee Bradstreet at Transworld of Steve Lake, EG Fratantaro, Dennis Telfer, and Dave Klimkiewicz, the founding fathers of Sector 9. And if you are a fan of skateboarding, you should read this
