Evan Doherty: Big E, Big Dreams, Big Interview

Evan Doherty: Small Guy, Big Dreams, Big Interview, Big E
If I had been told a couple of years ago that 8 years old skaters would participate at the most prestigious bowl contest worldwide, I would have dismissed that as pure science fiction. However, the 2012 roster of the Am Combi Pool Party at Vans is including a couple of them, which makes it even more amazing and interesting.
Evan Doherty is one of them. At 8, Evan Doherty is already busting moves on a skateboard that many of his older peers cannot pull off.

One of Evan Doherty's goal is to get the Gold at the XGames
When Evan Doherty nailed his first 540 last June 2011 (only 7 months ago…) it was kind of a big deal in the skateboarding world. Especially since Evan was only eight years old!! The news was so amazing that even Tony Hawk tweeted "540, 8 years old, nuff said." At that time, Curtis Hendrix, the owner of Dairdevil, the shop that sponsors him said: “Evan rides for our shop, Dairdevil Boards. We have been skating with him for a couple of years now and when that kat wants to learn a new trick, that’s just what he does! A blast to skate with, a great attitude, and a total shredder! Congrats Big “E”, can’t wait to see the 720 go down!”.

You see, Tony Hawk’s "nuff said" was a bit premature, as soon, "Big E" landed 7 (seven – yes seven!) 540s in a row. Let me say that you not only need a lot of ability to do this but you also need a lot of power in your legs! That’s the kind of stuff that will end up on the Guiness Book for sure.

But that was not it! In September, he also landed a 720; that is two full revolutions; exactly as predicted by Curtis Hendrix two months before… It’s a big deal because Evan is actually the youngest skater EVER to land the 720, and his future is only getting brighter!

Some are referring to Evan Doherty as the future of vert skating, and once he gets more strength in his legs, he's going to have the force with him. Stars such as Pierre Luc-Gagnon, Shaun White and Bob Burnquist aren't ready to move over just yet, but they are certainly impressed. It took 31 years for Tony Hawk to land the 720 and it took just a couple of months for Big E to do the same!

"I have the most amazing 3rd grade teacher! Mrs Coram and her family came to visit me during a Vert session tonight.
They are all leaving soon to do Missions in Africa, and wanted to see me skate in person before they left. She will
be missed, but I am thankful to have had her as my teacher for even part of the year!
So supportive of my skateboarding and a wonderful teacher!"

As for the legendary Tony Hawk, the day after said 720, he tweeted: "Today's news: 8-year-old @evansk8r can do 720's: http://say.ly/fohHSA" RT Please!" let’s do some math here. If Evan Doherty, at 8 years old can spin 720°, what can he spin at 31 years old? Well, he will spin 2,790°.

Just kiddin’ (or maybe not…)

Nuff Sed, here is isTia’s interview with Evan Doherty.

isTia.Tv: When did you start skateboarding? Evan Doherty:
I got my first skateboard at age 4 1/2 - a Spiderman Special!

isTia.Tv: What is your specialty? Evan Doherty: I really like it all, and I try to
He did first a 540, then seven 540 in a row, then a 720 and now he is entering the Combi Pool Party at Vans next WE.
work on all of it but I think Vert is my best, right now.

isTia.Tv: When was your first skate contest? Evan Doherty: My first skate competition was at Vinny's Skatepark in Papillion, Nebraska. I was 5 years old, and I didn't place at all.

isTia.Tv: Hometown / Where do you live? Evan Doherty: I was born in Massachusetts, lived in Salem, New Hampshire until I was 5, but Greenwood, Missouri is my home now!

isTia.Tv: What are your favorite skateparks? Evan Doherty: Well...I got to skate the DC Vert ramp once and that was pretty cool.
The 3rd Lair Bowl is killer, and Rye Airfield is awesome too, though I haven't been there in a long time.

isTia.Tv: Where do you skate? Evan Doherty: I try to mix it up. But I skate my vert ramp, Penn Valley in Kansas City, and KC Indoor most often. I am really not picky...just as long as I can skate!

isTia.Tv: How many hours do you skate a day? Evan Doherty: It is always different. I don't have a schedule or anything. Sometimes I'll skate for an hour - sometimes for 7. It depends on what is going on and where we are.

isTia.Tv: When did you first met Tony Hawk? Evan Doherty: Unfortunately, I have never met Tony Hawk. I would love to, of course! I was stoked when he tweeted about me though! I was like "WOW! Tony Hawk knows I am alive?"

isTia.Tv: Tell me what happened when you first landed the 540? Evan Doherty: I first landed my 540 on June 15, 2011. It felt AWESOME!! I was so happy because I had wanted to land one SO bad!

isTia.Tv: How did you feel when you landed the 720? Evan Doherty: I got the 720 on September 12, 2011. I had tried it a few times since landing the 540, but I just sort of put it away.

That night, Dad and I decided to go hit the Vert because dinner wasn't ready yet. On my way out, Mom joked to me, "Ev - why don't you go for the 720?" 15 minutes later - I did. I am not sure if we ever ate dinner that night because we were all so excited about it!

isTia.Tv: How about the 900? Evan Doherty: I haven't gone for a 900 yet, but I am ready to try! I just need to skate a bigger ramp, like the Mega-Ramp or a mini-mega. I hope I'll get the chance soon!

isTia.Tv: How are your parents involved with skateboarding? Evan Doherty: My Mom and Dad haven't skated a day in their lives, but they are SUPER supportive. They really give a lot of their time and money they don't have for me to be able to try and live my dream. They are pretty cool.

isTia.Tv: Do you have Sponsors? Evan Doherty: I have awesome sponsors, and I am so thankful for them! They are : Hosoi Skateboards, Osiris Shoes, Triple 8 Helmets, Dairdevil Boards Skateshop, Flashburn Fabrication for Grind Rails, and I ride for Helmets in Hands which promotes wearing your helmet. I am also part of the Trog Army out of 3rd Lair - Protectors of Skateboarding Everywhere! I also have Brian at Boss Sheds in Kansas City, who was so kind to buy me some shoes before I had a shoe sponsor.

isTia.Tv: What are you gonna do to train for the AM Combi Pool Party? Evan Doherty: There is no other bowl like the Combi anywhere, so I just have to do the best I can here. I skate the outdoor bowl here, when it's not freezing out! And of course, I pray!

isTia.Tv: Are you coming before the contest to train in the bowl? Evan Doherty: I am coming in just a couple days before the Pool Party to skate it as much as I can!
isTia.Tv: Who do you see in the Podium at the Combi Pool this year? Evan Doherty: There are some sick skaters on the list for sure. I am thankful just to have been invited to skate alongside them all. Of course, I am secretly hoping for a huge shake up and the 3 youngest dudes to be up there..ha ha, just kidding. Seriously, Alex Sorgente, Corey Juneau and Heimana Reynolds are the bomb!

isTia.Tv: How have you tried to prepare for the Protec contests in the past & this year? Evan Doherty: This will be my first Protec Contest, and my first AM contest...and I am so pysched!

isTia.Tv: Have you ever been injured while skating? Evan Doherty: Nothing too serious, lots of bruises, and I did get a huge splinter in my butt once off a Vert Ramp , and I had to get 3 stitches to close it up once it was taken out.

isTia.Tv: What have you done in the past 3 months? Evan Doherty: A trip to Houston, Minneapolis, California - all for skating! I got to see the new skateboard movie coming out called "Hardflip" too during our trip to California. That was awesome! Christian Hosoi and Brian Sumner are both in it.

isTia.Tv: What were the last contests you did? Evan Doherty: My last contests were Skate it Up at Southside in Houston. I came in 1st in my division. Also the King of the Groms Qualifiers in Minneapolis I placed 1st in Expert Bowl, 2nd in Expert Mini Ramp, and 3rd in Intermediate Street. It was an awesome weekend.

isTia.Tv: What is your best contest of the year? Evan Doherty: Gosh that is hard to say. I had an awesome time at the National State Games in Encinitas California in August. I had to take my Vert runs and my bowl runs back to back, otherwise we would have missed our flight home, which we almost did anyway! So I had no idea how I did until we got a call right before we got on the plane that I came in 1st place in Sponsored Vert and 4th in Sponsored Bowl, That was pretty cool!

isTia.Tv: What trick are you working on? Evan Doherty: I always am trying something new- but then I always have to do the stuff I have already learned too..otherwise I'll get rusty.

isTia.Tv: List your three favorite music bands? Evan Doherty: Thousand Foot Krutch, City Harmonic & Rush

isTia.Tv: Goals for 2012? Evan Doherty: To at least TRY for the 900 , and I would love to skate the Mega Ramp.

isTia.Tv: Something else? Evan Doherty: I just want to thank everyone who has been so supportive of me. It means a lot to me. I really, really want to thank my big sister, Emma. She is really cool about everything to do with skateboarding, and even bakes special treats when I have a vert session. I couldn't skate without her having my back.

Thanks Big E and God Bless for the Combi Pool Party at Vans
