Heimana Reynolds #1 WCS under 15 Bowl Rider interview

Heimana Reynolds 2011 year in review video: Vans Am-Tec, Hangar Bangar, Phoenix Am. WCS Oregon bifecta,
WCS Tim Brauch, Steadham Spyder Cup and 2011 WCS Am. bowl champion. Combi, Graveside, Kapolei, etc...
Heimana Reynolds #1 WCS under 15 Bowl Rider interview

Heimana Reynolds is the #1 WCS bowl rider for 2011; a title that he will have to keep in 2012 by working harder. It’s not that he will retire and capitalize on that asset; it’s just that the competition in the Ams section is so fierce that it has just become insane. All those kids are so good that this year it’s impossible to foresee not only who will win the Combi Pool Classic; but also who will be on the podium. My only bet is that the top 5 will be very close this time. Frankly, I wouldn’t trade anything to be in the jury,
Heimana Reynolds Kapolei Bowl. Smith Grind
that’s a hard work. Just being there and watching the future unfold will be sick enough.

But Heimana is ready, willing, and able. He has years of training and contests behind him. He has a father that’s 100% behind him and sponsors that support him. Heimana’s skate roots may come from surfing, via his father, but he is an all-terrain skater, equally good in vert, ramps, bowls and even street even though most of his early influences are vert and bowl riders. Besides, all-terrain is the direction that skateboarding has taken ultimately sweeping 20 years of street domination and resetting the clocks to a new era and for those not ready to adapt that’s gonna

be a lose-lose situation.

Of course, skating the Combi has nothing to do with street but with flow and style. Back-and-forther beware, regardless how sick your tricks will be! That’s when all of Heimana’s genes can help. If you haven’t seen him won the Tim Brauch contest, you should hit play immediately. His run is full of jaw-dropping-never-seen-before new tricks.

On top of that, Heimana lives in Hawaii, so he has been off the radar until a couple of months ago but now that everybody knows about his skateboarding skills, he will be one of the most watched, photographed and filmed of the 2012 Ams Combi

Pool Classic…

Even if the contest is in 5 days, he took the time to answer those questions, busy as he his between his school, his training and the visit of Allysha Bergado and Lizzie Aramanto (who he took to surf to the … North Shore … ??) . Here is what Heimana Reynolds said to isTia.Tv, just 5 days before the contest…

isTia.Tv: How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started? Heimana Reynolds: My dad has been around board sports his whole life. He surfed semi pro and skated for fun. He was also a North shore lifeguard. During my early years as a kid surfing was really the thing my dad

and I did, but I wasn't really into it that much. When I was 6, he built me a miniramp and I was hooked.
isTia.Tv: Were there any early influences on your skating? Heimana Reynolds: Of course Tony Hawk and his video games. But also Shaun White, Danny, Bob, Rune, Trujillo and of course Cab and the Animal Chin crew. Mostly the videos influenced me, so when I actually met them it was so cool…

isTia.Tv: How are your parents involved with skateboarding? Heimana Reynolds: My parents are awesome and they have been supportive since the start. We have a tight family that does everything together. My dad trains,

manages, films, deals with my sponsors, gets me to events and is actively involved in the industry. We have a youth skateboard development school that I help with and we are in the process of opening a skateshop/ private minipark in Hawaii.

isTia.Tv: How good are you at school? Heimana Reynolds: School is very important to me and my parents. I attend the most prestigious and highly academic private school in the state. It is where President Obama went, if that says anything. Anyway, I have to work very hard there to get good grades.

isTia.Tv: Let’s talk about Disney XDs "Next X". What was it about? Heimana Reynolds: It was kind of like a reality
Disney XDs Next X
drama series where 4 up and coming action sports athletes get chosen and mentored with former XGames athletes and the winner gets to showcase their skills at the XGames. I got Rune Glifberg and the other skater got Bucky. I was contacted a couple of weeks before the film date. They flew my dad and I to film for a week at a skatepark they called the Next X park and they turned it into 7 one hour episodes. It was a lot of fun eating good, traveling, meeting new friends and contacts with Disney taking care of the tab. Then they flew us out again for the XGames where I skated in front of a sold out crowd as the forerunner for the Super park event. It was a great experience that
Between Hosoi and Cab
I wouldn’t trade for anything. I also got a lot of positive exposure and you are considered lifetime Disney talent with some cool perks.

isTia.Tv: Did you fall in front of a sold out crowd? Heimana Reynolds: No, thank goodness. It was pretty scary though.

isTia.Tv: Do you prefer bowl or street? Heimana Reynolds: I like both aspects, but I am definitely better at bowl and tranny.

isTia.Tv: Are contests important for you? Heimana Reynolds: Yes especially the Vans Am. Next weekend. It is important to go to contests for myself and to show
Shaun White and Heimana

my sponsors what I am capable of.

isTia.Tv: How many contests have you been in? Heimana Reynolds: I couldn’t tell you. Lots of them since: mini grom to grom to Am. I also try to surf competitively when I have time.

isTia.Tv: Do you often go to contest? Heimana Reynolds: Yes as much as I can. As long as they are legit events.

isTia.Tv: Do you like contests? Heimana Reynolds: Yes, especially winning…

isTia.Tv: Your best contests ever? Heimana Reynolds: Winning the
Heimana meeting PLG and Bucky for the firts time at XGames 13
WCS Tim Brauch memorial contest in San Jose for am. bowl and becoming the overall 2011 WCS am. bowl champion. My best contest memories are: The ones on the podium.

isTia.Tv: Your worst contests ever? Heimana Reynolds: I can’t really think of one. They are all fun, learning experiences. But I would say when people don’t clear the coping when you are competing.

isTia.Tv: Tell me of the King of Groms. Heimana Reynolds: I competed in the KOTG series when it first came out. It was super competitive and there were lots of kids coming from all over. I started off in the beginner division when I
Next X Nose Grind
was 8 and the next year I was in the intermediate division, 9, and age 10 I was in the expert division. Trog and 3rdlair/KOTG crew are awesome. They taught me how to compete and be stoked on competing.

isTia.Tv: How many states have you visited thanks to skateboarding? Heimana Reynolds: I've only visited about 4 or 5 states, but I go to California a lot.

isTia.Tv: How many countries have you visited thanks to skateboarding? Heimana Reynolds: None yet, I would like to go to Australia sometime in the near future and tour Europe.

isTia.Tv: How do you pay for all those trips in the US? Heimana Reynolds: I have to say that I am very grateful for my sponsors and support group, without them I would not be where I am today. I try to give back as much as I can and work hard to give exposure. As you know, it can become very expensive traveling from Hawaii all the time.

isTia.Tv: When you travel overseas from Hawaii for an event, how do you do with the Jet Lag? Heimana Reynolds: I try not to take the red eye flight because that will throw me off.

isTia.Tv: Do you go a couple of days before? Heimana Reynolds: Yes so I can figure out some lines and watch the locals.

isTia.Tv: Do you have to bring school homework? Heimana Reynolds: Yes, I have to plan with my teachers and tutor to stay current so I don’t fall behind. Lots of time management.

isTia.Tv: How were you qualified for the Phx Am. street event? Heimana Reynolds: Vans and In4mation hosted a street event at my homepark. Vans provided 2 winners an opportunity to compete in the phx am. for an all-expense paid trip. I got lucky and I was one of the winners to represent
WCS Oregon Bifecta backside Cross Bone
Hawaii.

isTia.Tv: How were you qualified for the Am Combi Pool Party? Heimana Reynolds:
WCS approval.

isTia.Tv: What are you gonna do to train for the AM Combi Pool Party? Heimana Reynolds: Stick to my guns, keep the wheels down!

isTia.Tv: So, How is it growing up in Hawaii? Heimana Reynolds: It is awesome! Nice weather, beaches, surf, skate and aloha.

isTia.Tv: Are you originally from there? Heimana Reynolds: Yes I was born and raised there. So were my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on.

isTia.Tv: Do you have Hawaiian ancestry? Heimana Reynolds: Yes not much, but I do.

isTia.Tv: What is a haole? Heimana Reynolds: That’s funny. In definition: It is someone not originally from the islands. A foreigner or visitor.

isTia.Tv: Do you eat coconuts? Heimana Reynolds
: Yes, but too many will have you sitting on the toilet all day.

isTia.Tv: What bowls do you have in Hawaii and how big are they? Heimana Reynolds: There aren’t many and the deepest bowl is around 10. You got to hit up backyard pools, DIY Graveside, Cholos. That’s why I try to go to California 4 or 5 times a year to gain more knowledge and experience.

isTia.Tv: Do you go often to those bowls? Heimana Reynolds: As much as I can

isTia.Tv: Do you skate backyard pools? Heimana Reynolds: Yes as much as possible.

Fontside Nose Bone haiwiian style
isTia.Tv: Who do you see in the Podium at the Combi Pool this year? Heimana Reynolds: I would like to see myself of course. But it’s about putting it together. There are so many gnarly shredders these days. Alex Sorgente is last year’s winner. He is just incredibly tech and consistent.

isTia.Tv: How have you tried to prepare for the Am-Tec contests in the past & this year? Heimana Reynolds: I try and skate big tranny and pool coping. It is hard because there is nothing in Hawaii that is comparable to the Combi bowl. I try to do other sports and hobbies so I don’t get burnt out and continue to enjoy skateboarding. And the progression comes along with it.
isTia.Tv: Have you participated at the Am Pool Party before and what was your ranking? Heimana Reynolds: Yes last year I got 9th. I would like to start putting more time in the Combi. The locals have it dialed.

isTia.Tv: Have you ever been injured while skating? Heimana Reynolds: I have gotten a couple mild concussions, broken my foot, broke my wrist and had bunch of sprains along the ways. I broke my wrist at Woodward west this past Summer on the miniramp the day before I was supposed to do Mega. I was super bummed.

isTia.Tv: What have you done in the past 3 months? Heimana Reynolds: Lots of school, enjoying time at home and skating with friends.
isTia.Tv: What were the last contests you did? Heimana Reynolds: The Steadham Spyder Cup at Hickam skate hangar. A 2 day Saturday/street and Sunday/bowl event.

isTia.Tv: How did you do? Heimana Reynolds: I got lucky. That is my home park. I won both street and bowl for open sponsored am.

isTia.Tv: What trick are you working on? Heimana Reynolds:
I need to learn more spin rotations and flip variations. I am more of a coping tech/air skater. It’s just more of what I skate here in Hawaii.

Hey, Lizzie, I hope that Heimana told you not to drink too much coconut milk or...
Ya know, that stuff is not for haole, Locals only!!...
isTia.Tv: What kind of terrain do you mostly skate? Heimana Reynolds: My homepark is Hickam skate hangar. It has street, bowl and the only vertramp (old school style) on island. It’s perfect for all terrain skating. It’s also on a federal military base so it becomes semi private.

isTia.Tv: Do you surf? Heimana Reynolds: Yes the ocean is a part of life growing up in Hawaii. It is the birthplace of surfing. The Hawaiians invented it.

isTia.Tv: Snowboard? Heimana Reynolds: I did it 3 or 4 times but I would enjoy doing it more for sure.

isTia.Tv: Other sports? Hobbies? Heimana Reynolds: Mostly Ocean related sports. Surfing, fishing, diving, etc. We are surrounded by beautiful coastlines, warm water and clear sunny skies. I also play a little drums.

isTia.Tv: Let' talk more about your sponsors, what they do for you, what can they do more, are they supportive and how do they support you? Heimana Reynolds: My sponsors are awesome. I would not have all this opportunity and support without them. With sponsors, you have to work hard, make good videos, respect, be humble, give back and good contest results.

isTia.Tv: Who are your favorite old school skaters? Heimana Reynolds: Cab, Hosoi, Lance Mountain, Salba, they are all rad…

isTia.Tv: What’s the most difficult trick you have done? Heimana Reynolds: Probably most spins or rotations.

isTia.Tv: What is your favorite surface to skate? Heimana Reynolds: Concrete - bowls/pools. and wood!

Heimana asking Allysha: "How is it being the #1 at The Combi Pool Classic"?
Her answer: "How is it to be the #1 WCS Bowl rider"?
isTia.Tv: Do you wear pads and helmets in a pool/skatepark/bowl? Heimana Reynolds: Yes. I am proud to say I protect my brain with a helmet. I have slammed my head many times hard with a helmet in the bowl and I can’t imagine, if I didn’t wear it what would have happened.

isTia.Tv: Who do you like to skate with? Heimana Reynolds: I visit California every couple of months for competitions or training so I really enjoy skating with all the rippers out there. The level is so high out here. But when I am home in Hawaii I skate with my best friend, Noodlez.

isTia.Tv: Are there skaters that are so impressive that you just stop and watch them? Heimana Reynolds: My favorite skaters are the masters, pros and the new school rippers that have it all. Street, tech, coping, bowl, spins, flips, etc and the ones that go big. Ben Hatchell, Ben Raybourn, Pedro, etc…

isTia.Tv: What magazines do you read? Heimana Reynolds:
I like to read Thrasher, Skateboard mag, TW skate, surf and Flow skatemag Hawaii.

isTia.Tv: How long do you spend skating every day? Heimana Reynolds:
Weekdays probably 1-3 hours if I get my homework done and on weekends probably longer.
isTia.Tv: So far, what have been some of the highlights of your skateboarding career? Heimana Reynolds: King of the Groms beg, int, expert, Next X, 2011 WCS am. bowl title. Getting sponsored by LRG and DC.

isTia.Tv: Do you have a special diet? Heimana Reynolds: No, not really. I eat salad as much as possible.

isTia.Tv: BTW, I know Lizzie Armanto and Allysha Bergado are in Hawaii this week. Have you skated with them before? Heimana Reynolds: Yes we are all good friends. We skated some bowls and did some surfing.

isTia.Tv: Where do you want to take your skills and skating? Heimana Reynolds: I want to try and take it to the highest level, learn as much as possible, give back and see how far I can go. Be humble, let the skating do the talking and respect the pros that opened the doors for the up and comers.

isTia.Tv: Something else? Heimana Reynolds: Thanks to Istia for this opportunity. My primary sponsors: LRG, DC, Local 808 Entertainment and (flow) support: 187, Spun,Wahoos, Spy, S-One, Jessup, Vitamin water, in4mation and Dakine. My ohana or family for their continuous support and God.

Thanks Heimana and good luck for Vans

Great interview from a great young man. I skate with Heimana now and then at Hickam and it's great to see him cheering and encouraging everyone whether they are just beginning or learning a new trick. Good luck Heimana!
