Curren Caples: Pro-Tec Pool Party 2012 Profile

Curren Caples: Pro-Tec Pool Party 2012 Profile

It should not come as a surprise that Curren Caples has been invited to the Protec Pool Party 2012. Born on January 10, 1996 in Akron, Ohio he lived there for two years before moving to Oxnard, California. Curren Caples Dad is from the San Fernando Valley, but he is above all an ex professional surfer who has his own surf (and skate) shop in Oxnard. Curren Caples started skating barefoot and in a recent interview on the Vans website said: "I remember my parents telling me my feet were destroyed from griptape. I was doing ollies and stuff barefoot…” The 16-year-old Curren Caples celebrated his birthday with a special Vans video and is the first male XG athlete to be born after the X Games began in 1995. Curren took the XG Park contest by storm in 2010, finishing 4th in a field featuring some skate legends. He just switched to pro status and he's not only a gifted skater but also a smooth surfer with his favorite wave a mile from his house and his own skatepark close by. Any coincidence with Pedro Barros is fortuity… Curren is homeschooled and going into 9th grade.

The park where he used to skate every day in Ventura, Skate Street, was basically all trannies. They had 14-foot walls and stuff and I’d go there every day after school. He was 5 or 6 when he first started skating there and it shut down when he was 10.

When he was only seven years old he first met with Geoff Rowley but was only doing vert at the time, then again, he met Geoff again when I was 12-years-old at the other Volcom indoor park and that’s when he asked Curren Caples to ride for Flip. In the same interview for the Vans Website he says that "I remember I was riding for Powell and the Flip team manager at the time asked if I wanted to ride for Flip and I was like, “Oh, I just got on Powell and I don’t want to just leave like that.” A year later I got on Flip. I remember when Geoff asked me my dad was like, “Ok, the only way Curren will ride for Flip is if you come to our demo tomorrow.” We had a demo the next day at my dad’s skateshop and Geoff was like, “Alright.”."

In 2010, at age 14, he competed in his first summer X-Games, where he finished fourth in the Skateboard Park event.

Curren Caples finished 4th at the Damn Am Atlanta 2012 Finals Presented by Nike SB, Sunday, April 22, 2012, 2nd at the Damn Am Atlanta 2012 Semi-Finals Presented by Nike SB, Sunday, April 22, 2012, 6th at the Damn Am Woodward West Friday Street Qualifiers, Friday, October 21, 2011, and 3rd at Empire Backyard Party Qualifiers, Saturday, August 27, 2011.

Curren Caples is sponsored by Flip Skateboards, Independent Truck Company, Bones Wheels, Hurley, Vans, and Red Bull and he will compete in the next Protec Pool Party 2012.
