Vassiviere Skate Park or UFO?

Vassiviere Skate Park or UFO?
Vassiviere Skate Park: the Martians took the wrong turn at the galaxy of concrete and did not land at Los Angeles but in France.

July 7th and 8th, the French Old School Skate Jam (FOSSJ) celebrated their 7th birthday. Yeah, it’s been 7 years that the French crew is organizing a bowl contest for anybody above 40 years old. This year, the contest was not a contest. Actually, it’s never a contest. It’s just a jam between OG skaters that went through all the hoopla of skateboarding. From boom to burst to boom to burst to street skating and hip hop, to vert and wooden ramps and burst and boom again with the construction of multiple concrete skate park across France.

Vassiviere is not your everyday skatepark. For once, it is built on an inhabited island, secluded from civilization. You have to take a boat and a train to get there. You have to trek amid marshes (at least, the contest day it looked like marshes) to get were the Martians have landed. Only real skateboarders can go to Vassiviere… You have to pay in blood or be part of the secret Chivalry: one for all, all for one.

Then, the guys who created this skateable art are coming from everywhere. The architect is from Korea, and the concrete crew is coming from Peru and Belgium. Only the French could do this of course. But they have a very high esteem of what art is. After all, skateboarding was born at Le Trocadero, which is close to the Museum of Modern art. So art and skateboarding were born in the same cradle. Talking about the cradle, take a look at the Vassiviere cradle and especially at the phosphorescent paint that is supposed to light at night. Well the omen was bad, because the first night of the opening, there was a storm like you only see that in Indiana, or India, not sure of the country anymore…

Anyway, the FOSSJ 2012 is over and now that the storm has flooded the bowls, let’s have the pix and vids flood Facebook … Sweet revenge…

Next year, I'll be there...
