|Eddie Elguera: this is what you can do at 50... Can your grandfather do the same?|
Resilience is the ability to work with adversity in such a way that one comes through it unharmed or even better for the experience. Resilience means facing life’s difficulties with courage and patience – refusing to give up. It is the quality of character that allows a person or group of people rebound from misfortune, hardships and traumas.
You may grow old and trembling about in your anatomies just about thinking of an acid drop or an fs invert.
You may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins.
You may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds.
But there’s one thing you should never be afraid of is learn again and celebrate a 50th birthday in 2012 like it was 1979…
The only one cure for resilience is to to learn again. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. Learn the acid drop, the FS invert or everything you never learned in the 80’s. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting.
Learning is the thing for you as it was for Eddie El Gato Elguera who relearned the FS invert and showcased it at Vans today.

Eddie El Gato Elguera 50th Birthday Party at Vans
If you were not skating in the 70’s or 80’s, I’m not sure you can understand the feeling it was at Eddie Elguera’s 50th birthday party today… Over the past few years, old cats said again and again, “35 years ago, I would have never imagined that I would skate past 20 and still land on my feet.” And there we are, three decades after that mythical Los Angeles drought that started everything, with the same flame inside, same drive, same passion… If 35 years of obstructions and destructions did not stop us, what will stop us now?
The generation of skaters that started in the early 70’s, just at the turn of Nasworthy’s magical discovery had ups and down. When it stopped in the early 80’s, our dreams were not broken, but our soul was. I remember skating a concrete half-pipe in France in 82-83 (with no flat), lonesome. Lost. For months and then for years. It seems so strange that skateboarding is an individual sport, but that skating alone is so painful... Skating alone is a heresy and we burn the heretics over there. So, instead of skating alone, I did the unthinkable: I stopped skateboarding but then my heart started to bleed. Suddenly, another unthinkable surprise caught me: the next generation of skaters raised from the ashes of the previous generation: Cab, McGill, Lance Mountain... And my heart was warm again.
But something happened again. Trends changed and a new generation popped up from nowhere and changed the deal forever. Until the turn of the century, when the skate that I love started to rise again.
